Cadet League

Sunday 6th March saw Darlington Table Tennis Academy field 2 teams for the final weekend of the Cadet League held at Ormesby. The A team sitting in 5th place in their division faced 2 of the top 3 teams in their final 3 matches. First match was against the eventual deserved event winners, Bishop Auckland A, there were no easy games here for Darlington with all of Bishop Auckland’s players much higher up the national ranking list than our own but solid performances by Katie Wray, Thomas Crowther and Callum McRae made life tough for our opponents. Bishop Auckland went on to win the match 8 – 1 with our win coming thanks to Callum beating a player ranked 180 places higher than him. Game 2 we faced Ormesby 1st team  who finished the event in 3rd place, representing Darlington were Georgina Peart, Katie Wray and Callum McRae who each won 1 game each in a 6 – 3 defeat Game 3 we faced Bishop Auckland B team and another County Durham derby, this match saw the Darlington team of Georgina Peart, Thomas Crowther and Callum McRae win 8 – 1 with 5 of the 9 matches going beyond 3 games. The result could easily have been the reverse but for Darlington winning 3 of their matches in deciding final games and closing out the other 2 in 4. Congratulations to Bishop Auckland A team on your success here, deserved winners and we look forward to next years match up.   Darlington Table Tennis Academy B Team started the final week in 1st position but were being chased hard by Bishop Auckland C team. Representing Darlington in all these games were Ben Savage, Adam Cruddace and debutant Matthew Pearson. Our opening match was against a young Ormesby 4th team  and all Darlington players recorded 3 wins each to make a 9 – 0 score line. Our 2nd match was against our closest rivals  Bishop Auckland C. We lost this match 5 – 4 with Bishop Auckland players looking to chase us down at the top of the league. Every point here for Darlington and Bishop felt like 2 and there were some very nervous kids out there so well done to all the players. Our 3rd match was against Ormesby 3rd team and Darlington won this match 7 – 2. this Ormesby team were again young and very talented and 3 of our victories were gained in 5th game deciders. Our last match was against Bishop Auckland D and Darlington won this match 8 – 1 to end the event at the top of the B Division.   My Thanks also go to those players that contributed to this B Teams achievement including Abbie Stephenson and Nile Gott. Abbie played 3 weeks out of the 4 and Nile played week 1 of the competition, may I also thank Matthew Pearson in making his competitive debut and filling In for Abbie, we may not have won this division without your help.   My thanks also go to Luke Robinson, Jamie Peacock and Katie Peacock for their help in coach your friends and team mates. And to the parents for their support and assistance, Kev Wray, Nigel Savage, Ann McRae, Allie Pearson your nails will grow back. And to the parents of all the competitors for allowing their children to take part.

Two Darlington Table Tennis Academy teams played in the national cadet league at Ormesby on Sunday 7th February. This competition is in week 3 of 4 and the teams are split into two divisions. The A team of Georgina, Katie, Callum and Thomas maintained their mid table position with 2 wins and 2 losses, beating Northfield and Ormesby 2 and losing to Northumberland and Blitz. Callum and Katie put in exceptional performances in the loss to Blitz gaining victories against players they have never beaten before while Georgina and Thomas pushed the Northumberland team forcing the games into extra ends against a very highly ranked team. The 2 wins came very convincingly with all Darlington players playing better than I have seen them in any competition.   Darlington Academy B team  maintained their position towards the top of their division with 3 wins and 1 loss, their first game was a defeat to a determined Bishop Auckland team followed by victories over Ormesby, Bishop Auckland and Ryedale. Abbie, Adam and Ben have played some of the most consistent table tennis over the 3 weeks in this division and with 1 more week to go I am sure the 3 of them will be looking at finishing as league champions.

I would like to thank all the parents who attended to watch not only their own children but the encouragement they gave the others  Bishop Auckland 2* Match Reports 11th May 2014Thomas Crowther   Thomas competed in his very first open tournament here at bishop Auckland. His first event was the cadet boys and was pitched against 3 ranked players. He lost his first match 3-0 but put in such a good performance his opponent was forced to change tactics, his second match he lost 3-1 but with a bit more experience could have won. His third match was against the highest ranked player in his group and he played a great match and was involved in some long rallies but went on to lose 3-0. Thomas next played in the plate events losing both of his matches 3-1 but both matches were played against experienced players and Thomas pushed them both hard in all of his games. Next for Thomas was the U-13 boy’s event again he was drawn to play against nationally ranked players and lost both games 3-1 both matches showed that Thomas is prepared to compete at this level of competition. Thomas then competed in the plate event but at the end of a long day was defeated, again by a player experienced in both tournaments and cadet league.   Georgina Peart  First event for Georgina was the U-13 girls, she lost to 2 players ranked higher than her in the ETTA ranking list both matches finishing 3-0 but some close matches were played. Her third match was a derby against Erin, and Georgina eased through 3-0 against a determined opponent. Next for Georgina was the plate event winning her semi-final 3-0 , she went into the final and lost 3-2, 11-9 in the decider. Georgina’s next event was the cadet girls and she was drawn against 2 highly ranked players whom she has never beaten before, in her first match she put the disappointment of losing her last match behind her a won 3-2 her next match was a great victory winning 3-1, not only were these unexpected victories but watching Georgina listen to the advice of her coaches also left me stunned. Georgina next met a very highly ranked player in the semi-final and was eased out 3-0.   Erin Greensmith  First up for Erin was the U-13 girls, and Erin was part of a group of four with the other three players having ETTA national ranking points and having already qualified for this months national championships. Erins first game could not have been much tougher playing against No2 ranked player at U-13 level. Erin lost her three matches in straight sets although you would be forgiven for thinking she had left the table a winner as she smiled her way through every match. Erin next played in the plate event and lost 3-0 in what was a very close match and again playing against a more experienced player. Next event for Erin was the Cadet girls, and first match Erin won in three straight sets, the first time a Darlington Academy player has won on their debut. Erins next two games again were against very highly ranked players and lost both matches 3-0. Overall Erin enjoyed her first tournament experience and can hopefully attend the next one.   Joe Watts First event for Joe was the Cadet Boys, Joe was drawn into a group with 2 very highly ranked players and played some excellent table tennis in all his matches narrowly losing some games. Next for Joe was the plate event which Joe lost 3-1. Next event for Joe was the Junior Boys, and again Joe was drawn in a very tough group losing two matches and going out in the plate event. The coaching staff would like to thank all the students from Darlington Table Tennis Academy that took part in this event and all the coaches and parents for their help and support. We are growing a squad now with team mates that encourage and support each other and your conduct on the day has been a credit to yourselves and the academy.   Darlington table tennis academy held its first closed championships at Longfield sports academy on Saturday 22nd February with photo 2 6 events plus 6  plate events.  There was some very good table tennis played by the 39 participants from age 7 to age 83, results as below.
